REMINDER!! Please remember to request UNION representation if approached by any inspector. Your right to representation falls under the Weingarten right. If you fear your job could be in jeopardy, contact your Steward immediately! We remind you that postal management does NOT have to tell you about your Weingarten rights - it is your responsibility to ask for this representation! As always - keeping informed, keeping knowledgeable regarding your job, your responsibilities and duties with the postal service protects you and your family as well with a secured job - get involved at your local, state and national levels of the Association and know what protections you have as you never know when something may occur that could put you in jeopardy!

Do you know what the following presents to you?

Curbing your wheels, placing your transmission in park, engagign your emergency break, turning off the ignition, taking the key out of the ignition and if you are not in direct view of the vehicle it's to be secured.

Well - think about them because we are still having carriers severely disciplined because they are being caught not performing their jobs safely. You may be getting by with something right now, but sooner or later, and probably when you least expect it, you will understand how serious an infraction that something is for you!

A few years back the USPS issed a zero tolerance policy concerning the proper procedure for leaving the vehicle when it was unattended. This policy consisted of some very simple steps which all employees must perform - they are listed above. We used to have many standup talks mandated along with training to insure that all rural carriers understood this policy. New employees do receive this information as part of their initial training.

Are you aware that the postal service has safety teams who go out into the field to observe how you perform your duties? Management is required to observe carriers as they deliver mail and as they work their routes.

So, remember this as you step out of your vehicle just to run that package around to the garage - someone may be watching - did you turn off the ignition - take the key out - did you put your vehicle in park - engage the emergency break........someone may be lurking around just waiting to watch you handle your responsibilities! Be smart - work smart!!!

2008 Calls for Members in Your Local Office to Step Up for Local Steward Elections!

July, 2008 is the time when any member in an office may call for a Local Steward Election. The National Constitution allows for local steward elections to be called in July of every fourth (Leap) year-even if a local steward is already elected and certified in the local office. If no one in the office calls for an election, then the current local steward will continue in office for another term and that is the end of it.

It would be great if all of our post offices throughout Illinois had a Local Steward. If your office does not, talk to each other and ask someone to step up and be your Local Steward. If you are interested in holding an election make sure the posting goes up at least 15 days before the election. For more information and further details contact your Assistant State Steward representative soon. (Please also note that any delivery unit (work location) with 50 or more rural craft employees is entitled to elect
